A Circular Future With Chemical Recycling

Helping Solve Our Planet's Problem Of Plastic Waste By Creating Value

We can all agree that plastics, an essential component of our modern world, have profoundly (and for the most part, positively) impacted the way we live our lives – sometimes in ways that we may not even realise. These new materials are still a major driving force of further progress, however plastics, as we know, also have a dark side. With our societies (and thus production) geared towards constant consumption and convenience, humanity is suffocating the planet, for example with one-use packaging, a good part of which (depending on country, of course) is never recycled – it ends up incinerated, in landfills or, in the worst cases, our oceans. Plastic is now found in every corner of our planet, in every organism. Changing mindsets, practices and policies on a global scale is of paramount importance, but this also has to go hand in hand with employing all available tools and taking advantage of new advancements in technology to process and reuse our waste.

Overview

Every year in the UK 2.5 million metric tonnes of plastic is produced. With only around 37% of that being recycled, each of us, as individuals and businesses, can and must do more to progress towards achieving complete circularity – that is, where we cannot reduce our reliance on these materials and it is not feasible to switch to reusable plastic products, we must recycle what we produce and feed it back into the system to negate its environmental impact and minimise the amount of new raw materials used to manufacture new products. Existing and widespread methods of recycling, while essential, are not a viable method or the ideal candidate in many cases – streams of mixed materials that cannot be economically sorted any further, or those containing more impurities (food waste, paper etc.) for example, are not suitable candidates for traditional mechanical recycling.

This is where emergent technologies such as chemical recycling come into the picture. Pyrolysis of waste plastics, a concept the industry has been developing and testing for decades, has now reached maturity and commercial viability – one of these patented technologies is our partner BUSS ChemTech AG’s Flash Pyrolysis process, and we are very happy to announce that  – as their country partner for this tech – we are bringing it to the UK market in the form of complete equipment and support packages for those looking to set up chemical recycling plants.

The technology is based on the process of plastic pyrolysis – that is, heating plastics at a high enough temperature in an oxygen-deprived environment to gasify them – this gas when condensed produces pyrolysis oil, which is distilled and then fractioned to the client’s  specifications. The resulting end product can be sold to manufacture new (virgin) plastics or as sustainable fuel for the global aviation industry for example. The leftover uncondensed gas is fed to a generator that provides electricity for the equipment – making the plant energy-independent -, and the high-carbon solid byproduct (“char”) also has a variety of useful applications in manufacturing and construction. Thus, all of the materials from the process are utilised – making ours a truly circular solution.

What we offer / The Technology

The product we offer as BUSS ChemTech’s UK partner for their chemical recycling product line is the complete equipment package to set up a plant, ongoing technical support for all provided equipment and any business support our clients may require.

Please see the below list for an overview of the process. For more readily available information, please follow the link to the technology’s factsheet on our partner’s website or get in touch with us by filling out the form at the end of the page or by email/telephone.

Raw materials must be shredded, dried, and free of metals and inorganic fibers. If required we can, with our partners, help with the mechanical preparation and transport of materials to the plant.

Once at the plant, material is constantly fed through the pre-heating and extrusion equipment converting it to the ideal semi-molten state and temperature that ensures the conditions are always met for optimal reactor efficiency and operation.

The patented Flash Pyrolysis Reactor is the core of our process, evenly heating the semi-molten plastic at the ideal temperature and thus guaranteeing maximum product quality while minimising the amount of byproducts and energy consumption as well.

Every customer’s needs are different – whether you simply require the highest yield or need different cuts, we can provide a solution tailored to your exact requirements.

Our technology separates high-carbon solid byproducts, crucial for producing high-quality pyrolysis oil. These can be collected in barrels or, if desired or required for compliance with local regulations, with closed systems.

Combustible gases from the reactor can be used directly or stored. If required, we provide absorption equipment to remove or neutralize harmful compounds before gas utilization.

Our process is energy-neutral when the leftover gas is used to run a generator to provide electricity for the plant and ancillary equipment.

Raw Materials

While it is of course true that the cleaner and more pure the feedstock used, the higher the yield and lower the operating costs of a plant, one must also keep in mind the costs of additional equipment or the potential environmental impact of extra transportation that is required to further minimise impurities and separate different materials.

In some cases, it can be more environmentally friendly and economically advantageous to use a process that is specifically designed to handle waste streams considered too contaminated or not sorted to the degree required for other processes. This is where our Flash Pyrolysis technology comes in, which is capable of handling feedstock with the following parameters:

  • Polymer types: PE, PP, PA, PS, PC, ABS
  • Paper, textiles, wood: max. 5-7%
  • PVC: up to 3%
  • Organics: max. 7-10%
  • Moisture: max. 7-10%
